Queen's Regiment - Queen's Chapel : General Correspondence 1953-1954
Includes extracts from the Minutes of the Cathedral Executive Office October 1935 – December 1943 concerning memorials within the Cathedral.
Correspondence from 1953 covers the original proposal for a Chapel of Chivalry which was re-named as the Queen’s Royal Regiment Chapel in April 1954. The Regiment undertook to provide a contribution of at least £5,500 towards building costs. Correspondents include Sir Edwards Maufe, Colonel Giffard, Major D Clowes, Lt Col F A H Ling. The Regiment launched an Appeal to all of its branches inviting donations and subscriptions.
Further correspondence, mainly between Miss Iredale, Sir Edward Maufe and General J Whitfield, concerning various items for the completion of the Chapel including Altar Book, chairs, grilles, kneelers, stonework, inscriptions etc.
The Chapel was dedicated in July 1959. Subsequent correspondence, mainly between Miss Iredale, Sir Edward Maufe and Colonel H C Dunscombe concerns provision for laying-up of regimental colours on 29 September 1960 and the inclusion of further regimental badges.
Further correspondence regarding the completion of the Chapel with Major-General J Metcalfe and Sir Edward Maufe, including a drawing signed by Edward Maufe R.A, of gates at the West end of the Chapel. These were supplied and fixed by Dove Bros.
Correspondence between H C Margrett and G H Emerson concerning Mr Emerson’s donation of a prayer desk (Prie Dieu) for the Queen’s Chapel in memory of his brother.
