Royal Air Forces Association - Dossal Curtain
Correspondence 1954 – 1957 mainly from Miss Mary B Ker representing the RAF Association, and J G Browning, Chairman of the Surrey Regional Committee, concerning their proposed gift of the Dorsal Cloth. Covers the difficulties encountered in raising the necessary amount.
Further correspondence 1990 – 1998 concerning the need to replace the original Dorsal Curtain which had faded over thirty years. Colonel Fleming, Cathedral Administrator, received advice on replacement from Dr Richard Gem, Secretary of the Cathedrals Advisory Commission, including the suggestion of approaching the artist Hans Feibusch for a design.
W A Evershed, Administrator, advised R Shillito of the RAF Association in January 1998 that a new curtain had been ordered from Humphries Weaving Company, silk weavers. The cost of £10,000 was met by the Friends of Guildford Cathedral. A fabric sample is included in the file. A donation of $48 from RAF Association is acknowledged following the installation of the new Dossal in June 1998..
Correspondence with Revd D A Smethurst of the Parish of St Martin of Tours, Epsom, concerning the re-location of the original dossal from Guildford to hang in Epsom in April 1998.
