Minutes of the Extraordinary General Meeting of the Guildford New Cathedral Fund Council, Jan 1958
The Executive Committee were thinking in terms of Consecration in 1959. Although this was a matter for the Bishop, Provost and Chapter it was our responsibility to give them some assurance so they could plan well ahead. Any programme was dependent on the continuance of Miss Iredale’s services. The Bishop wanted the consecration to take place in 1959 if possible and wanted a definite date fixed within the next few weeks so that the necessary arrangements could be made. There was a difficult financial situation in the Diocese and he had appointed a commission to examine the finances of the Diocese. He believed that after 1959, the parishes would have to devote their main attention to other Diocesan objects.
In her report Miss Iredale summarised the more important events of the year. She stressed the importance of the Cathedral itself being the means of raising £10,000 during 1958 and this would necessitate it being available to the very large number of visitors and parties which tour the Cathedral incessantly during the summer months.
