The Guildford New Cathedral Fund Executive Committee July1955
11/07/1955
It was omitted from the previous minutes that the Committee agreed to bear the extra cost of a heavy electric cable to the Pilgrims’ Hut, Messers. Doug Brothers would do this.
A Chairman’s tea party on May 20th was well attended and much appreciated.
Mr D.W. Phillips reported on progress made in organising and financing the provision of teas to visitors to the Cathedral at the Pilgrims’ Hut. Mr. Phillips and his wife were given thanks for undertaking this task. Mr. Phillips undertook to send the Cathedral Fund a monthly report and to consider with the Cathedral office the possibility of carrying on the occasion facilities beyond the end of September.
Miss Iredale reported that within the last two and a half months another £11,000 had been raised towards the building of the Nave. She reported on a number of special gifts. The brick books had to date brought in over £4,000 and not all the books that had been issued had as yet been returned. She reported on the problems facing the builders with regard to the price of bricks and the difficulty in getting an adequate supply of bricklayers and workmen for the site. Miss Iredale reported that it had not been possible to get enough voluntary guides to support the existing custodian who was seriously overworked and was retiring at the end of August. She reported on the need of action in planning a Canadian contribution to the Cathedral and she made several suggestions.
After some discussion it was agreed to accept the offer of £1,000 gift and £1,000 loan towards the cost of building the cottages.
The idea of a Founders’ Plot would be discussed at the next meeting.
It was agreed that donors of a £1,000 towards the Nave would be allowed to record the fact that a window in the Nave was given as a memorial in the Golden Book. Donors would have to be informed that later donors may wish to change things.
The Provost was anxious to have two different organs temporarily installed for comparison as to their value; one to be an electronic organ and the other to be a miniature pipe organ. The Committee approved.
The Committee agreed to resume possession of the Cathedral allotment area in the Autumn.
