A Meeting of the General Committee of the New Cathedral and Churches Fund, December 1934
Lord Middleton had had a meeting with some of the leading people of the Diocese and it was agreed that the Cathedral, a central home of life and worship for the Diocese, was the first essential. The sum of about £16,000 was agreed by those present on the condition that the Cathedral should be started within three years and that it should be the chief objective of the Diocese. Seven years have passed since then and the conditions have not been fulfilled – Farnham Castle, new churches and other objects had intervened and in the meantime the financial crisis in the nation has occurred and the circumstances of many of the guarantors had altered.
