Choir Antics

Music plays an important part of the life at Cathedrals and Guildford Cathedral is certainly no different.  The Choir at Guildford Cathedral is a very well respected choir and year after year produces outstanding musicians.  In 2014 one of our choristers – Tom King – was announced as the winner of BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year and in 2016 Hannah Dienes-Williams, one of our girl choristers, made it through the final.

Early in the development of the Cathedral the choir had become well respected, thanks to the work of Barry Rose and even secured a record contract.  If you want to find out more about this interesting part of the Choir’s history have a look at one of our previous blog posts.

Every chorister experiences their time as part of the Cathedral in very different ways.  It is a very challenging life for young people fitting choir rehearsals and performances around their academic work at school, and as a result they must have fun where they can.

As a result we have interesting items in the archive reflecting the more humorous and fun side of being a chorister.  In the archive we have an interesting item created by one of the choristers in 1979 when the choir was on tour.  It is a news cutting book made by choristers to reflect their time away from home on tour in a very amusing way.

Consequently we have a very interesting perspective of the life of the choristers in the late 1970s and how they experienced life on tour.
