Designing the Stained Glass

Watercolour design for window

As with every Cathedral building we have stunning stained glass windows throughout the Cathedral.  Each of these windows are unique and stunning representation of supporters and the local community, they have been made and installed over a long period of time (1952-2011) and therefore is a reflection of changing attitudes towards design.

There are over 90 panels of stained glass designed by over 21 artists, all very different and very unique.

Here we are focusing on an interesting insight into the designing of one of our fabulous stained glass windows – the Nurses Window.

In 1957 it was decided that a window should be made that represents the nursing profession. And so a competition was run by the Nursing Mirror to get the design.

Around 70 people entered their designs which were judged by the architect Sir Edward Maufe and Dame Elizabeth Cockayne, Chief Nursing Officer of the NHS.

This item is one of entries,  although not one of the winning entries it just shows the high standard of the competition entries.

The design was produced by Mr K. Golunkski, R.M.N. (Charge Nurse).  It has some fabulous details on the design that highlight the history and the development of nursing.  Including a reminder of Florence Nightingale – ‘The Lady with the Lamp’.

For more information about the stained glass windows please do look at our archive catalogue website and explore what we have got on our other windows.
