Minutes of the Extraordinary General Meeting of the Guildford New Cathedral Fund Council November 1956
The Bishop was invited to address the meeting, he stressed the importance of completing the building of the Nave of the Cathedral by the earliest possible date so as to put the Cathedral into use. He was disappointed it would not prove possible for the Nave to be completed in time for the Lambeth Conference in 1958, when visitors from all over the world would be here and would visit this, the youngest Cathedral in England.
The Bishop was convinced the money for the building should come from Parishes and so in his meetings with clergy and lay people throughout the diocese, he would stress the importance of the parishes concentrating on the building of the Cathedral during the next two years.
The Council had not sought to be representative of any section of the diocese but to secure the help of lay men and women, who could take some responsibility for helping to get the Cathedral built.
