Minutes of the Twelfth Annual General Meeting of Guildford New Cathedral Council, March 1966
The report from the Executive Committee pointed out, that with the completion of the North Garth porch, the main fabric of the Cathedral had been finished and felt that no further major work should be undertaken until there had been a substantial reduction in the debt and obligations on the existing structure, with the possible exception that it might be necessary to spend some more money to render the north side of the Cathedral ground safe and usable for car parking purposes. They were expecting to receive further plans from the University Architect which would be discussed by the full Chapter and suggested that representatives of the Council should be present at that meeting. The Chairman was asked to write to Colonel Dove to express the Council’s appreciative thanks for the careful work, courtesy and consideration shown by him and his organisation in carrying out the construction of the Cathedral.
Three major fund-raising events were being planned for the coming months :
1. A Cathedral tent at the Surrey County Show at Stoke Park, Guildford on Whit Monday, May 30th.
2. An Open Day at Sutton Place by the kindness of Mr Paul Getty, on Sunday August 7th, this would be shared both in organisation and in proceeds with other local charities.
3. A Festival of Flowers to be held in the Cathedral from September 29th to October 2nd with the active co-operation of the County of Surrey Flower Arrangement Association and it’s 46 member clubs who had accepted responsibility for filling the Cathedral with approximately 150 floral arrangements of very high standard.
The Dean told the meeting that it was proposed to hold the usual commemorative service on Tuesday May 17th at which the North Garth Porch and the Library would be Dedicated.
